For sleep care, the GP will generally first refer the patient to a sleep centre at a general hospital. If the sleep problems are complex, a second opinion is required, or there are too many persistent symptoms, the general-hospital specialist can make a referral to the SEIN Sleep Centre.
Referral guideline for GPs
If the diagnosis is known but there are persistent symptoms, or if there is a relevant comorbidity, it is possible the GP may make a direct referral to the SEIN Sleep Centre. The individual diagnostic groups are as follows.
Direct referral to SEIN for:
- Narcolepsy
- Sleeping problems in combination with epilepsy
- Sleeping problems and an intellectual disability
- Insomnia with other symptoms
- Second opinion on insomnia with severe suffering
- Second opinion on circadian rhythm disturbances
- Second opinion on parasomnia
- Second opinion on restless legs syndrome (RLS)
- Second opinion on sleep apnoea
- All combinations of the above diagnosed sleep-wake disorders
You can refer the patient via ZorgDomein or via a letter of referral. With that letter you send the patient’s medical history and use of medicines.
We prefer to receive the referral by email. You can also send the form to us by fax or by post. The Sleep Centre has facilities in Groningen, Heemstede and Zwolle.
